Abstract
Poly(3-mesityl-2-oxopropyl methacrylate)[poly(MOPMA)] was prepared in presence of 1, 4-dioxane solution using 2, 2’-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator at 60 oC. The poly(MOPMA) was characterized by 1H and 13C-NMR, FT-IR, GPC, DSC and TGA techniques. The thermodynamic properties of poly(3-mesityl-2-oxopropyl methacrylate) [poly(MOPMA)] with alcohols, and alkanes were investigated by means of inverse gas chromatography method at various temperatures. The specific retention volumes, Vog, weight fraction activity coefficients of solute probes at infinite dilution, Ω1∞ Flory-Huggins thermodynamic interaction parameters, χ12∞ between polymers and solvents are determined. The partial molar free energy, ΔG1∞, the partial molar heat of mixing, ΔH1∞ at infinite dilution and the solubility parameters of polymer, δ2, were calculated at various temperatures. While the glass transition temperatures, Tg, of poly(MOPMA) was found to be about 366 K by differential scanning calorimetry, it was determined to be 361 K (from 1 / T ; lnVgo plot) by IGC technique. The five alkanes and five alcohols used as probes are non-solvent for poly(MOPMA) in the temperature range of 413-453 K. Also the solubility parameters for poly(MOPMA) at infinite dilution were found by plotting the graph of [δ12 / RT-χ12∞ / V1] versus solubility parameters, δ1, of this probes.
