Platon’a göre ruh idealar dünyasından yeryüzüne inmiştir ve tanrısal bir kaynaktan çıkmıştır. Ruhun idealara yönelmiş akıl yönü, akla uyan irade yönü ve ona uyan içgüdüsel yönü olmak üzere üç yönü vardır. Akıl, iradenin de yardımıyla içgüdülerin zorlamasına karşı koymalı ; insan, ruhun asıl yurduna dönmesi için gereğini yapmalıdır.
